Policy makers have emphasized policies that compel the manufacture and/or purchase of vehicles that emit zero-emissions at the tailpipe. All totaled, engine heat accounts for 26% of the fuel consumed, and exhaust heat accounts for another 24%.

The Federal and state governments also expect the manufacturers to use self-financed competitive measures to provide incentives for the change of pre-Euro-5 diesel vehicles to vehicles with the latest exhaust gas aftertreatment or electric vehicles. In this sense, modern and clean diesel technology can also contribute to climate protection.

The German government announced on Tuesday its new plan of financial incentives for electric vehicle purchases. Drivers will no longer receive the same amounts they did previously for purchasing electric cars, as Germany announced it would reduce the amount of money it gives consumers for switching to sustainable powertrains.
