Minnesota has become the latest state to adopt California clean car standards; the new standards were finalized by a notice in the state register on Monday. The policy will implement two clean cars standards to reduce vehicle emissions. The rule only applies to new light- and medium-duty vehicles for sale in Minnesota.

Emergency authorization of the regulation was needed as the federal Clean Air Act (CAA) requires states that adopt the California standards to do so at least two model years before the standards take effect—in this case, 1 January 2022 for vehicles labeled as Model Year 2025, which starts on 1 January 2024.

EPA’s new Clean School Bus Program will provide $5 billion over the next five years (FY 2022-2026) to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and low-emission models. Further Clean School Bus competitions will be run every year over the next five years. The Agency will also launch a grant competition later this year.

The New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board (EIB) and the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Quality Control Board (AQCB) have each adopted the Clean Car Rule after a joint public hearing. Their independent approval of the Clean Car Rule allows California’s Advanced Clean Cars to be implemented statewide in New Mexico beginning 1 July 2022.
