These results indicate that coal and oil are the energy sources leading to most emissions, and that hydro, wind, and nuclear are the energy sources leading to least emissions. On the two extremes, coal and oil result in about 176 times the emissions from hydro.
An article in the latest issue of IEA Energy: The Journal of the International Energy Agency reports that Estonia, which has the most developed oil shale industry in the world, is collaborating in pursuing wider use of oil shale in a cleaner, more sustainable manner. Different that shale oil—i.e., million (US$12.8
These results indicate that coal and oil are the energy sources leading to most emissions, and that hydro, wind, and nuclear are the energy sources leading to least emissions. On the two extremes, coal and oil result in about 176 times the emissions from hydro. Energy source. Proportional amount of emissions relative to hydro.
Oil is a strategic commodity second to none—it underlies the global economy and even the American way of life. Of course, other countries benefit from this fact, with about $900 million flowing out of the US to buy foreign oil every day, and about 40% of that going to OPEC. [
Researchers from the Center for Functional Nanomaterials at Brookhaven National Laboratory and users from ExxonMobil have developed a new approach to identifying atoms that are neither carbon nor hydrogen within a specific type of molecule in crude oil. Crude oil is one of the most complex molecule mixtures on the planet.
In an EU-funded research project, an international consortium is aiming to develop new production methods for sustainable marine fuels to replace heavy fuel oils in shipping. Although cleaner fuels are available, many companies opt for HFOs due to their low cost. However, HFOs are banned in the national waters of many countries.
That insight could also help the car industry make cleaner combustion engines. The industrial processes behind crude oil refineries and the inner-workings of gas-powered combustion engines can emit PAHs, which can form into toxic air pollutants such as soot. Zhao et al.
A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) estimates heavy fuel oil (HFO) use, HFO carriage, the use and carriage of other fuels, black carbon (BC) emissions, and emissions of other air and climate pollutants for the year 2015, with projections to 2020 and 2025. Neste Pro Diesel will be produced at Neste Oil’s Porvoo refinery and will be available at Neste Oil’s service stations across Finland beginning this fall. 2011) Optimized usage of NExBTL renewable diesel fuel.
Some clean energy production, such as generating electricity by capturing excess heat at manufacturing facilities, is ineligible for the production tax credit because it is not expressly listed in the code, while other types of energy production generating significant air pollution receive sizable tax subsidies. Clean fuels tax credit.
Globally, commercial ships emit almost half as much particulate matter pollutants into the air as the total amount released by the world’s cars, according to a new study led by NOAA and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ship pollutants affect local air quality and the health of people living along coastlines. Earlier post.).
The dual-fuel diesel-biomethane powered bus is expected to reduce pollutant emissions and greenhouse gas emissions by around a half. The Hardstaff OIGI (Oil Ignition Gas Injection) is a dual-fuel system developed to substitute natural gas for diesel in light- and heavy-duty engines. Dual-fuel use is a very attractive option.
Under such circumstances, there will be a battle between coal and NG in many sectors, particularly the on-road transport sector, which is exclusively petroleum-dependent but currently facing a worldwide oil shortage. The original reason for developing EVs and CNGVs is to substitute oil, not to reduce emissions of GHGs or any pollutant.
The CMA CGM partnership deals with the development of cleaner and more sustainable energies to eliminate CO 2 emissions, greenhouse gases and air pollutants. It is sailing round the world in order to speed up development of the most innovative solutions for the environment.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has posted a revised draft of California’s proposed Short-Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) Strategy. SLCPs are a category of pollutants which remain in the atmosphere for a relatively brief period, but have global warming potentials that are much higher than those of CO 2.
CARB also adopted a new plan to curb destructive “super pollutants” including black carbon, fluorinated gases and methane. The plan, California’s Short-lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy, maps out the route to more rapid greenhouse gas reductions by clamping down on these super pollutants. —CARB Chair Mary D.
The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has fined two shipping companies for failing to switch from bunker fuel to cleaner, low-sulfur fuel when sailing within 24 miles of the California coast, as required by a state law adopted in 2008. They must also follow all fuel switchover requirements, and maintain accurate records.
It, or a scaled-up version, could also provide a solution for the Asian motor vehicle fleet, in which two-stroke engine vehicles constitute a major share—and contribute significantly to air pollution. Initially, they used an off-the-shelf, synthetic-blend, TCW3-rated two-stroke engine oil. Lubrication proved to be an issue.
(SSSKK) plan to begin trials on 1 July of a diesel-electric hybrid transit bus fueled by a mixture of Fischer-Tropsch diesel (FTD)—specifically, Shell’s gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuel—and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), a type of renewable diesel offering similar characteristics to FTD. Earlier post.)
The advantages, Herrick noted, include fuel cost savings, cleaner burning fuel and no lead emissions. It is also a much cleaner burning fuel, reducing smog pollutants by 90% and reducing CO 2 emissions by 30%. It is also a much cleaner burning fuel, reducing smog pollutants by 90% and reducing CO 2 emissions by 30%.
would be designed to capture up to 90% of its carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery and sequestration in an adjacent oil field. IGCC plants gasify solid fuels into syngas, which then is used by a gas turbine combined-cycle system to generate electricity, providing a cleaner, economical coal-to-power option. Earlier post.).
Marine shipping fuels will get cleaner in 2020 when a regulation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires a decrease in the allowable amount of sulfur in fuel oil from 3.5% pollution impacts in 2020 with and without the use of low-sulphur fuels. —i.e., from 35,000 parts per million (ppm) to 5,000 ppm.
They further agreed to reduce air pollutant emissions by aligning air pollutant emission standards for light- and heavy-duty vehicles and corresponding ultra low-sulfur fuel standards by 2018. Short-lived climate pollutants. In addition, the SmartWay freight transportation program will be extended to Mexico.
A new report from the National Research Council examines and, when possible, estimates, “hidden” costs of energy production and use—such as the damage air pollution imposes on human health—that are not reflected in market prices of coal, oil, other energy sources, or the electricity and gasoline produced from them.
This will play a significant role in accelerating the structural adjustment of China’s energy industry, relieving pressure on natural gas supply from central and eastern China, and promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, as well as air pollution control, the company added. trillion cubic meters. Bcfd by 2020. Click to enlarge.
