The California Air Resources Board approved changes to an existing $28 million financial assistance program this week that will significantly help more California independent truckers qualify for the purchase of a cleaner-running vehicle.
Use of electric vehicles would achieve greater reductions in GHG emissions, corresponding to the rate that the electric grid becomes cleaner, through greater reliance on renewables and low- and non-emitting generation. This research points to the importance of two fundamental and parallel trends in energy and the environment.
Each of the four recipients will match a percentage of the grant amount with their own funds to purchase compressed natural gas-powered vehicles; retrofit diesel engines with cleaner technology; replace older, more polluting diesel buses with cleaner diesel buses; or purchase hybrid electric-powered buses.
More findings from the CalNex research on a variety of subjects, from the formation of ozone to the interactions of particles and clouds, are being presented at a four-day workshop May 16 through 19 in Sacramento, California.
These technologies include, but are not limited to, advanced aftertreatment and waste heat recovery; lean-burn plus lean-NO x emissions traps; integration of zero-emission miles technologies; further refinements in reducing friction and parasitic energy losses; and widespread utilization of renewable and natural gas and hydrogen blends.
