Gulf Oil LP, a national branded supplier of motor fuels throughout the United States and its territories, has deployed 34 transport trucks that run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Gulf’s new vehicles are Peterbilt 386 liquefied natural gas trucks incorporating Westport Heavy Duty 15 liter high-pressure direct injection (HPDI) systems.

On their 100+ mile round trip, these trucks burn diesel fuel that damages the ozone, spews out noxious particulates that seek-out lungs and eyes along with oxides of nitrogen that help create smog, along with other nasty—and toxic—unpleasantness. How much cleaner could the air be if, instead of 50 trucks, it is 500, 1,000 or 10,000.

Called the CCS H2 ICE, the turbo helps compensate for the lower energy density and higher airflow needs of hydrogen compared to fossil fuels, according to a Cummins press release. Hydrogen burns cleaner then gasoline or diesel , but it still produces some harmful criteria pollutants like nitrogen oxide (NOx), which Cummins is familiar with.
