They convert Toyota Prius hybrids into mostly electric vehicles that get 100 to 150 miles per gallon. Going faster than that triggers the car’s gasoline-powered engine, transforming the vehicle back into a traditional hybrid.

Think has even shown a convertible prototype. Better Place is building stations in San Francisco, Hawaii, Israel, and Denmark to swap out 1,000 pound batteries in a car wash type set up. In the end, gasoline won out because it was the cheapest and delivered the most energy per unit, but it took 20 years to sort out.
