Researchers at MIT and the Ford Motor Company have found that depending on the location, lightweight conventional vehicles could have a lower lifecycle greenhouse gas impact than electric vehicles, at least in the near term. Although Henry Ford was right about being able to make fuel out of virtually any plant material, only wood could be grown in sufficient quantities to make biofuel mainstream. Ethanol can only be used in a blend of up to 10% with gasoline, biodiesel is being limited to no more than a 5% blend with conventional diesel.

But I can’t help thinking that this technology will make the current crop of hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape look like Ford Excursions. Imagine using your laptop computer on a battery.
