Existing law exempts certain clean, alternative-fuel vehicles from these occupancy requirements, so that a vehicle with a sole occupant may use an HOV lane—if the vehicle displays a Clean Air Vehicle sticker. The project was selected for funding by the California Energy Commission, which awarded Sierra Northern Railway and GTI nearly $4 million in March to fund the design and demonstration of the train in Sacramento, with the goal of creating a clean alternative to diesel locomotives.
