Intelligent Power Generation (IPG) will demonstrate the impact of Flameless Ceramic Turbine technology in UK electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, following a £1-million contract from Highways England. This growth will require high megawatt capacities across England’s road networks.
The two-year pilot project sets up a voucher program for buying or leasing clean vehicles, electric bicycles, scooters and other equipment, and by funding the infrastructure—charging stations, bike and scooter racks, for example—needed for these projects. If this project proves to be successful, it may be expanded.
The high-temperature (HT) PEM technology operates at 160-180 °C and has a high resistance to impurities in reformat gas—making it suitable to combine with fuel reformers. The combination can be done without the implementation of expensive and cumbersome clean-up technologies which enables a simple and cost-effective system design.

Over the past months, we have received significant interest from the marine industry for our methanol-powered fuel cells.
Conversion systems allow vehicles to run on alternative fuels; most conversions involve switching gasoline or diesel vehicles to operate instead on a gaseous fuel such as natural gas or propane; an alcohol fuel; or electricity.
These projects put more than 9,000 alternative fuel and energy-efficient light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on the road, and establish 542 refueling locations across the country. Existing law exempts certain clean, alternative-fuel vehicles from these occupancy requirements, so that a vehicle with a sole occupant may use an HOV lane—if the vehicle displays a Clean Air Vehicle sticker.
Fuel cell technology is also being used to power transit buses and forklifts, and to produce electricity for industrial uses. These funds were used to support projects that reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by using alternative fuels. Examples of these will be showcased at some of the tour’s stops.
Each of the four recipients will match a percentage of the grant amount with their own funds to purchase compressed natural gas-powered vehicles; retrofit diesel engines with cleaner technology; replace older, more polluting diesel buses with cleaner diesel buses; or purchase hybrid electric-powered buses.
However, widespread commercial use of electric drive on long-haul and heavy-duty routes is not yet feasible. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are considered alternative fuels. We also need to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to cleanalternative energy sources.
