Reuters reports that Chrysler has disbanded its ENVI team, formed in 2007 to bring electric-drive vehicles and related advanced-propulsion technologies to market. At the North American International Auto Show in January 2009, Chrysler had introduced two new EV concepts and updates on three earlier EV concepts developed by the ENVI group.

Chrysler unveiled four all-electric Chrysler Town & Country minivan concepts to the US Postal Service (USPS) in Washington, DC, as part of the USPS Earth Day celebration. Chrysler’s ENVI group leveraged the flexibility of its electric-vehicle strategy to demonstrate an all-electric version of its best-selling minivan.

The announcement coincides with GE’s submission this week for federal stimulus dollars from the US Department of Energy. GE has been exploring a “dual-battery” concept—optimized power and energy storage systems—with Chrysler for plug-in vehicles under a DOE-funded project. The initial investment in the factory will be $100 million.

As March came to a close, the Obama administration found GM and Chrysler’s restructuring plans “not viable.” Chrysler was told to consummate with Fiat quickly or else. But other cars, including the MINI E, will be out and about soon, and stimulus money abounds, so the question of public EV infrastructure is much discussed.
