Chrysler alone, for instance, may have 3 different battery pack shapes in its upcoming models. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. Companies like ECOtality are already working with Nissan, which seems to have given up on battery swapping.
