Under this cost-shared research and development (R&D), DOE is awarding $51 million to nine new projects for coal and natural gas power and industrial sources. This work will focus on designing a carbon capture system capable of capturing 50 to 70 percent of CO 2 emissions from blast furnace gas.

The average US residential customer pays 12 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) , which means the cost to drive one mile in an EV is somewhat less than 4 cents. By contrast, at 25 miles per $3 gallon of gasoline, those miles cost 12 cents each. Coal still supplies more power in the US than anything else, with natural gas next.

The electric grid is the most advanced energy-distribution network ever created and is constantly only a few feet away from us (far more ubiquitous than gas/ethanol/hydrogen stations). The first step was the hybrid, which proved to the world that electric power can reduce gas consumption. Electricity costs are relatively inexpensive.

Next post States’ Proposals for Gas Taxes Sputter 11 Comments 1. Even if you charge your EV with electricity made from coal fired generators you reduce your car’s pollution by half. But that cost in a built as an EV is much less than an ICE’s costs by about 1/2. If you charge with solar, is way less.
