Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here. If we look at the fine print, GM actually introduced a sort-of-a-hybrid vehicle as a 2004 model , though the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid/GMC Sierra Hybrid didn't have regenerative braking.

The Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle and the Ford C-MAX Hybrid earned an acceptable rating in this test, while the battery-electric Nissan LEAF earned a poor rating. The gasoline-powered Mazda 5 small four-door wagon is rated poor. The other two are the 2014 Kia Forte, a small car, and the 2012 Prius v, a mid-size hybrid.

What is a surprise to us, was the rebound in sales of the Prius Prime, which was up 128% YOY. And as you can see from the chart below, the the Prius is heading toward 60% of its sales being for the Prime PHEV version. The second key trend is the solid first-year sales of both the Ford Mustang Mach-E (27,140) and Volkswagen ID.4

Hybrid gains were largely due to an increase in Prius sales (up 29.7% However, GM total crossover sales of 39,937 were up 6%, driven by the performance of Chevrolet Traverse which contributed more than 6,600 sales. Compared with June: Chevrolet Aveo, Cobalt, Impala and Malibu contributed to a Chevrolet car retail increase of 8%.

The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.
