Anyway, the CX-80 is the latest to arrive, bringing with it two big six-cylinder engine options, as well as a clever plug-in hybrid powertrain that should see you spend much of your working week using nothing but electricity. But, I guess in keeping with Mazda’s move upmarket, they do throw a whole bunch of kit at each trim level.

Mitsubishi does plug-in hybrids (like in the Outlander ), Toyota does conventional hybrids (like the RAV4 ), and Nissan does e-Power. It’s not actually as fuel efficient as a conventional hybrid (and, for now at least, it’s more expensive, too), but Nissan says it’s far more fun to drive. And that means it’s not cheap.

Whereas the original Niro was available as a regular hybrid , a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a battery electric vehicle (EV), the new model does without the PHEV option. So instead it’s hybrid and EV tech for Kia’s new entry-level electrified SUV. But even as a hybrid the Niro doesn’t come particularly cheap.

This isn’t just-for-show suspension like we’ve seen on plenty of cheap e-bikes and e-scooters. I’m definitely an e-bike rider first and foremost, but I spend plenty of time on electric scooters, and so having this hybrid feeling was a really cool way for me to bridge the two camps and get the best of both worlds.

Dedicated city cars with cheap-feeling cabins, but rarer than a Pagani Zonda on our shores. The range extender hybrid i3s are basically the same price. It has the aero wheel cap kit and backup key card, sweetening the deal. They barely registered a sale in Australia, but these cute little Zoes did solid numbers in Europe.

Now an eight-year veteran on the Australian scene, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Safety kit also runs deep. But it’s had a chunky price rise over the old model.
