When IEEE Spectrum’s editor in chief, Harry Goldstein, needed to replace his 2008 Honda Fit in October 2020, he thought seriously about buying an electric vehicle. There were two Level 2 charging stations about six blocks away in a grocery store parking lot, but that was not a convenient or reliable option. One was affordability.

Cheap to run but expensive to buy, they offer theprospect of low or zero carbon emissions, but manufacturers won’t sell themunless motorists want to buy them – and motorists won’t buy unless the priceis right and there are enough places to charge the batteries. So the car uses an electrical store to power the drive motor.
