Another three are on the West Coast and in Hawaii: Seattle (4), Portland (5), and Honolulu (6). LEAF performs well because of a good charging infrastructure, a dense urban footprint and congestion. Honolulu, with 26 quick chargers, has one of densest charging grids in the US. Los Angeles. Chicago and Denver (tied).

Better Place has started its initial deployment of EV infrastructure in Hawaii, with the launch of a project to incorporate its electric-vehicle infrastructure in Honolulu, in partnership with Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts’ Sheraton Waikiki Resort and Hawaiian Electric Company. Other charging stations will be at three Hawaiian Electric sites.

The US Department of Energy delivered more than $47 million in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for eight projects to further smart grid demonstration projects in seven states. The $47 million in new Recovery Act awards will support existing projects that are advancing demonstration-scale smart grid technologies.

The partnership combines GE’s global scale, broad technology portfolio, smart grid expertise, and its new WattStation Level 2 electric vehicle charger ( earlier post ) with Better Place’s EV services and infrastructure solution. Better Place is already working towards initial network deployments in these markets, beginning in 2011.

Integrated at US Hybrid’s Honolulu facility, the 25-passenger shuttle bus utilizes a 30 kW fuel cell fueled by a 20 kg hydrogen storage and delivery system. Onboard batteries are recharged by regenerative braking as well as grid charging.

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities will receive funding to purchase battery electric buses, associated charging infrastructure and a back-up generator to maintain bus service in a disaster situation. The charging infrastructure is an integral part of PSTA's long-term battery electric bus program.

Project partner Young Brothers operated the generator for 10 months powering refrigerated containers in Honolulu, Hawaii. One opportunity to do so was identified in Honolulu Harbor at the Young Brothers Ltd. (YB) This includes not only the use of a generator for reefer power but other applications as well.
