The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency works on behalf of the Swedish government, conducting and coordinating Sweden's environmental work within Sweden, the EU and internationally.
Sweden has striven to increase the share of biofuels in transport, and liquid biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel are currently exempt from energy and carbon tax. Sweden now consumes the most ethanol per capita in the EU, the audit office said, and is behind only Germany and France in total consumption.

In a traditional process, this is done using carbon or coke, while in the HYBRIT process the reduction is done using fossil-free hydrogen. The ultimate goal is to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from the process by fully using fossil-free inputs and fossil-free energy in all parts of the value chain.
Increased use of gas is a bridge towards climate-neutral transports. When trucks can operate on 80 percent pure biogas and 20 percent pure biodiesel, carbon emissions will be 80% lower than with conventional diesel technology. Three filling stations for liquefied methane gas have been planned in Sweden to date.
Carbon pools in the northern circumpolar permafrost region. trillion tons of frozen carbon, about twice as much carbon as contained in the atmosphere. Projections show that almost all near-surface permafrost will disappear by the end of this century exposing large carbon stores to decomposition and release of greenhouse gases.

By 2040, Volvo Cars’ ambition is to be a climate-neutral company.
The climate change benefit is estimated for a given year (2050) and human health and crop benefits are. Fast action on pollutants such as black carbon, ground-level ozone and methane may help limit near term global temperature rise and significantly increase the chances of keeping temperature rise below 2 °C (3.6 °F)—and

Policies to entice consumers away from fossil-fuel powered vehicles and normalize low carbon, alternative-fuel alternatives, such as electric vehicles, are vital if the world is to significantly reduce transport sector carbon pure-emissions, according to a new study. Note the different scaling used in the graphs. McCollum et al.
Quizzed by The Observer as to which country had objected to the 2050 target, director-general of Sweden’s Naturvårdsverket (Environmental Protection Agency) Lars-Erik Liljelund quipped , “China. by Jack Rosebro. China doesn’t like numbers.” The relative valuation of potential emissions offsets (e.g.
Volvo Cars, A-hus and Vattenfall recently launched the six-month One Tonne Life project—an attempt by a family (the Lindells) to cut their carbon dioxide yearly emissions from seven tonnes per person to a more sustainable one tonne. This creates a comfortable climate inside the house and the energy consumption becomes lower.
The Polestar 1 was built between 2019 and 2021 as a low-volume electric performance hybrid GT with a carbon fiber body, 609 hp, 1,000 N·m and an electric-only range of 124 km (WLTP)—the longest of any hybrid car in the world. The first permanent Polestar Destination opened in December 2021, outside Gothenburg, Sweden.
Volvo Cars and Northvolt have selected Gothenburg, Sweden to establish a new battery manufacturing plant which will commence operations in 2025, and complement the planned R&D center that both companies announced in December as part of an investment of approximately SEK 30 billion (US$3.3 Earlier post.).
Consultations have begun for deciding on placement of the plant in Norrbotten, Sweden. The choice of location will have a major impact on future competitiveness and climate benefits. The byproduct of using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen in steelmaking, instead of coke and coal, will be water instead of carbon dioxide.
The lab comes in addition to ongoing e-motor development in Gothenburg, Sweden, and battery labs in China and Sweden. The investments in e-motor design and development represent yet another step towards Volvo Cars’ climate ambitions and electrification strategy.
