Alcoa is supplying aluminum for Audi’s pilot project from a self-developed, innovative smelting process that emits oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. The new smelting technology uses an inert anode that replaces the carbon anodes that are traditionally used during electrolysis, which is the process used to make primary aluminum.

This is why we have taken the decision to neutralize the carbon emission of all our LCL shipments.

During this process, raw biogas is produced comprising about 55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide and other impurities are removed through a biogas treatment process, leaving nearly pure biomethane gas which is chemically equivalent to fossil natural gas. This turns driving vehicles into a form of climate protection.

The facility will filter 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air and mineralize it underground. With direct air capture technology, carbon dioxide is extracted from the ambient air and air free of CO 2 is returned to the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is thus permanently removed from the atmosphere.
