The BMW Group presented the first BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicles in a pilot fleet that will go into service this year. The fleet of less than 100 vehicles will then be employed internationally for demonstration and trial purposes for various target groups. The BMW Group sources the individual fuel cells from the Toyota Motor Corporation.

With its carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell, the BMW i8 sets new standards for a plug-in hybrid vehicle in terms of low weight. It can operate solely on electric power and offers the dynamic performance of a sports car, with an expected 0 – 60 mph sprint time of less than 4.5 Plug-in hybrid system.

Like the original BMW i3 Concept ( earlier post ), the three-door coupe is propelled by an electric motor developed by the BMW Group, which develops a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 N·m (184 lb-ft). The passenger cell forms the core of the Life module, which is built from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
