The German government is co-funding the three-year project that will test the first cars to run on dimethyl ether (DME) ( earlier post ), commonly used as a non-toxic propellant in aerosol spray gas, and monooxymethylene ether (OME1). Like liquefied petroleum gas, DME must be stored in a slightly pressurized tank.

The resulting hydrogen will be stored as a gas at a pressure of up to 5,000 psi (345 bar). It will then be piped to a fueling pump. The effort is focused on increasing America’s energy security, lessening its dependence on petroleum and improving air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation systems.
