Well you’re in luck, my friend, for not only are we getting the Ford Ranger and BYD Shark utes in PHEV form in a couple of months, GWM has locked in a plug-in version of its Cannon Alpha pickup for Australia, complete with 110km of EV range. Have you been waiting with bated breath for plug-in hybrid dual cabs?

It means you can travel, should you wish, a substantial distance between charges. Basically, if your electric car or plug-in (PHEV) vehicle has V2L tech, it has built-in bi-directional charging and an AC power outlet. This means you can power or charge AC appliances with a three-pin plug from your car’s (far larger) battery.

The three leading new options to re-supply our autos with energy are charging at home, battery swap stations and fast charge stations. The method that should seem most natural is charging at home. The only time involved is the few seconds it takes to plug in and later, unplug, your car and possibly press a button.

It is simply the cost of doing business. "On some products, the costs, particularly in advanced technologies, are high," he said in a lengthy interview with Automotive News (free subscription required). The car is expected to cost around $40,000. "Even the first DVD player cost many times more than it does today."
