GWM has joined the electric vehicle price fight, slashing the price of its Ora battery electric small car by $4000 to reset it below the magic $40,000 mark. The new $39,990 price for the Ora Standard Range pitches it head-to-head with the $38,890 BYD Dolphin and the $39,990 MG4 Excite 51 , as China’s EV price war heats up.

Unsurprisingly it’s Hyundai, launching its Inster city crossover SUV into Aussie hands early in 2025 with a target price – Hyundai Australia says – around $40,000. Hopefully they’ll squeeze it in for less to properly challenge the Chinese cheapies, who this year have been busy price war squabbling.

The sleek five-door with styling similarities to a Porsche Panamera is instead being put on ice as the fast-growing Chinese giant monitors the evolution of the local EV line-up. GWM has hinted it may hold the discounted line on Ora pricing, which woulds then undercut the MG4 as Australia’s cheapest EV based on retail price.
