BYD’s Tesla Model 3 Performance fighter is edging closer to its local launch, with what appears to be a top-spec model built to rival the fastest Tesla spied at a BYD dealership in Sydney. Looking every inch a baby EV9 , it’s set to be priced around $50,000 to challenge the Tesla Model 3 , BYD Atto 3 , MG4 and ever-expanding electric opposition. Charging speed wasn’t revealed, but quoted time to go from 10-80 per cent battery using a public DC fast charger was 31 minutes.

As I write, the MG ZS EV is on the road for $34,990; GWM Ora at $35,990, BYD Dolphin about $39,000 and MG4 about $40,000. 2025 Hyundai Inster – all four seats fold flat for van/camping potential, if you’re brave. It public charges up to 120kW, the battery taking 30 minutes to go from 10-80 per cent.

You’ll pay similar for a Tesla Model 3/Y, Renault Megane E-Tech, Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro Electric, but you’re in a pricier realm than the likes of a BYD Atto 3 or MG4. It’s a busy pool, giving buyers plenty of choice, and Smart’s a welcome returning player, even if it re-launches at a time of EV price reductions and cooling sales.

At $59,990 in a single well-equipped trim level — the e-2008 GT — it’s cheap compared to fellow Euro models like the BMW iX1 xDrive30 ($87k) or the Mercedes-Benz EQA ($78k). But it looks like less of a bargain when you pit it against the Tesla Model 3 RWD ($61,900), MG ZS EV Long Range ($55,990), or BYD Atto 3 ($48,011).
