People might be bored reading about the Prius but a review on four Priuses (2004, 2005, two 2006s) that my family owns that ran a total of 913k km (570k miles) should be interesting, right? We need to go back to November 2017, to the start of the ‘Prius Revolution’ in the family. It was time to buy our first car.

Prius drivers were stereotyped as left-lane camping, NPR-listening, Green Party-voting smug virtue-signalers. But it was based in one truth – the Prius might save you a lot of gas but man it was no fun to drive.

The current plunge in oil prices will likely negatively affect plug-in and hybrid vehicle sales in the short term; automakers such as BMW are already warning of lower sales of plug-in vehicles given the market context. During the 2008 oil crash when US gasoline prices dropped by 58% in half a year, Toyota Prius sales in the US fell by 47%.

Only available in the US beginning in March of 2021, the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) was apparently the top-selling PHEV in the US last year. According to an industry source the Wrangler traditionally has a fairly low percentage of its customers choosing to lease over buying. Leased mine.

Why the Toyota Prius of course. Honda took the bronze medal place with its Insight Hybrid. According to Gerd Lottsiepen, the spokesman of the German VCD Automobile Club, hybrid cars are proving cheap to run and very quiet. Mirror, mirror on the wall… which is the greenest car of all?

In May 2008, Toyota saw its Prius hybrid car turn it towards profitability in America and it scrapped plans to build a sport utility truck plant in Tupelo, Mississippi and chose to build a Prius plant there instead. Yet when gas prices tumbled later that year, plans for the Prius plant were shelved.
