Several European countries, including Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania are pushing to delay the EU’s potential ban on combustion engine powertrains in 2035. This news comes shortly after a public statement from the German Finance minister saying that Germany will oppose the 2035 combustion engine ban.
A ban on all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles made its way through the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 1. The EU formally approved a law that would ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2035 in an attempt to accelerate consumers’ choice of electric powertrains. I’d love to hear from you!
The gap to petrol shortened too, going from 11.8pp one year ago to 5.5pp. Compared to other EU member states, only the smaller markets of Greece and Bulgaria could beat this rate of growth. This was almost 5pp ahead of the internal-combustion engine ( ICE ) market. Meanwhile, petrol registrations in Italy grew 3.8%
