The Lightning uses a dual-motor setup with an electric motor at each axle, and the extended-range battery on my tester had a 131-kWh lithium-ion battery. I did plug in the other way, and I found charging to be well, slow. Ford shows an 8-hour 15 to 100 percent charging time on an 80A Level II, and that seems about right.

Since Compact Power is based in Detroit, and GM is their first big customer, maybe that’s enough of a reason to build at least a token factory in the U.S. The Volt, which GM prefers to call an extended-range electric vehicle, doesn’t use its internal combustion engine for propulsion, relying entirely on an electric drive system.

The three leading new options to re-supply our autos with energy are charging at home, battery swap stations and fast charge stations. The method that should seem most natural is charging at home. If cost is an important consideration, than charging your EV at home is a no-brainer as it cuts out any profit-hungry middlemen.
