So what’s in store for its plug-in hybrids in the interim? Bigger batteries for more electric range. While in Brussels, Belgium to drive the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge I was given a first look—and some first drive time—at the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid.

Volvo Cars launched the battery-electric Volvo C40 Recharge; based on the CMA vehicle platform it is the first Volvo model designed as pure electric only. Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years.

De Lijn, the public transport operator (PTO) in the Flemish part of Belgium, is ordering 44 new articulated plug-in e-hybrid buses; further, the operator confirmed the upgrade of 280 if its current hybrid buses into e-hybrids. The main advantage of e-hybrid buses over regular hybrids lays in their battery capacity.

Volvo has received an order for 11 electric hybrid buses and 2 ABB automated electric bus fast-chargers to the city of Namur in Belgium with public transport authority and operator TEC. Volvo’s 7900 Electric Hybrid ( earlier post ) features an all-electric range of approximately seven kilometers (4.35 ABB bus chargers.

The Volvo S60 sedan—which in Recharge form is currently the Swedish automaker’s most efficient plug-in hybrid—is being discontinued in the U.S. production, the final generation, which launched for the 2019 model year, brought a plug-in hybrid powertrain. for 25 model years, spanning three generations.

Starting in 2016, the Swedish brand has included plug-in hybrid versions of pretty much every new vehicle it sells in the US. . It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery. Where it falls down is its EPA-rated range: a mere 208 miles.

In Europe, the e-vehicle market is almost equally divided between battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars. Between 2010 and 2017, the highest numbers of electric buses in Europe were registered in the United Kingdom (~200), the Netherlands (~175), Belgium (~140), Germany (~90) and Austria (~75).
