Volvo Cars is tripling electriccar manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium as it prepares to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. The plant already builds the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fullyelectriccar, as well as a plug-in hybrid version of the XC40.
Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years. By 2025, Volvo Cars aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fullyelectriccars, with the rest hybrids.
Volvo Cars reported global sales of 48,520 in January, up 2% compared to the same month last year. Sales of Volvo Cars´ Recharge models of fullyelectric and plug-in hybrid cars increased by 31% in January year-on-year, accounting for 40.7% of all Volvo cars sold globally during the month.
All its European plants have had a climate-neutral electricity supply since 2008, while the engine plant in Skövde, Sweden, was the first in the company’s network to become completely climate-neutral in 2018. These and other measures are part of the climate plan Volvo Cars launched late last year.

In 2017 Volvo Cars committed that all new Volvo cars launched from 2019 would be electrified. The company has since reinforced this strategy, by stating that it aims for fullyelectriccars to make up 50% of its global sales volume by 2025. Plug-in hybrid variants of the XC40 are already manufactured there.
The C40 Recharge will go into production this fall and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium. The company will roll out several additional electric models in coming years and aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fullyelectriccars by 2025.
Volvo Cars will build a third manufacturing plant in Europe, positioning the company well to meet the continued demand from its customers for electriccars and capture future growth potential. The new facility represents an investment of around €1.2 billion; Volvo expects around 20% to be funded by governmental support.
Vehicle production will begin in Ghent, Belgium this fall with the first US customer deliveries planned for the fourth quarter of 2021. Responding to strong demand for the car, Volvo Cars has decided that it will start building the new fullyelectric Volvo EX30 in its Ghent plant in Belgium from 2025, expanding production capacity for its celebrated small SUV.
The Volvo EX30 takes Volvo’s legacy of building some of the safest cars in the world, electrifies it, and wraps it all up in Volvo’s smallest SUV package ever. At the same time, the EX30 is the fastest SUV Volvo has ever built with a staggering 0 to 60 time of 3.4 seconds in the […]
Volvo is reportedly shifting EV production to Belgium ahead of schedule. Production of the new Volvo EX30 and EX90 is moving to Belgium to avoid expected tariffs on electric vehicles made in China. Volvo announced it planned to build its new low-cost EX30 at its Ghent plant in Belgium last October.
Meanwhile, Volvo suggested the US-bound EX30 could come from Belgium as it looks to avoid newly introduced tariffs. The EX30 is “one of the best-selling fullyelectriccars in Europe” in its first few months on the market, according to Björn Annwall, chief commercial officer and deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.
Volvo sold 14,500 EX30s in the first quarter , quickly becoming “one of the best-selling fullyelectriccars in Europe,” according to Björn Annwall, Volvo Cars’ CCO and deputy CEO. Volvo was expected to move EX30 production to Belgium “from 2025” due to the demand.
The plan was to sell only fullyelectriccars while phasing out “any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.” Volvo EX90 production kicks off in South Carolina (Source: Volvo Cars) Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan explained, “We are resolute in our belief that our future is electric.”
