The original CivicWithACord design used 18 8-volt golf cart batteries. After some debate on the Google Group and dealing with clutch-link interference issues, I'm tending towards 12-volt group-31 AGM batteries for the initial design. My battery box has an exhaust fan, but still its an imperfect setup.

After much time on the phone with UPS Freight, the 8-volt golf cart batteries finally showed up today! Here is the pallet of batteries in the truck bay, minus the shrink wrap. Although the Bill of Lading clearly stated that this was a residence requiring a liftgate, UPS seemed to overlook that part of the order.

Can one revive a mostly dead battery? Above is a picture of a heavily sulfated 8-volt golf-cart battery I acquired yesterday. Just off to the right of the battery I've attached the $250 "Cadillac of Desulfators" and it's merrily buzzing away along with a 1-amp trickle charger. It had a floating voltage of 7.85

Mike and Shari both have colds and the welder that creates the frames for the battery holders is quite backlogged. Quite a fine fellow, he's been through three different battery types. He also highly recommends the BMW320i brake upgrade for the 914 to handle the extra weight of the batteries.

I'm a bit wiped from the initial burst of installing all the battery racks, so I took it a bit easier on Friday and Saturday to do some of the smaller installation steps. The two one-inch holes will get grommets for the high-current battery cables connecting the front batteries with the middle pack.

If you hadn't read before, the 18 8-volt golf cart batteries add 800 pounds to the weight of the car, so the suspension needs upgrading. On a slightly downer note, I ordered a $250 special desulfator for 6-24V batteries. I received the suspension parts from ElectroAuto today.

I'm still waiting on the battery racks/boxes from ElectroAuto, so I took care of a bunch of little things that have been neglected so far. Here's the battery tray that the directions said to remove. It's a pity that we have to remove this, but the size of the golf-cart batteries clearly interfere with the latch.
