Gas Li-ion batteries thwart extreme cold South 8 Technologies demonstrates the cold tolerance of its Li-ion battery by burying it in ice at the 2024 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit. That’s a big improvement on conventional Li-ion batteries, which start to degrade when temps reach 0 °C and shut down at about –20 °C.

Lithium-ion battery maker EnerDel has been selected to provide the heavy-duty battery systems used to power Japan’s first lithium-ion-powered electric bus. EnerDel’s heavy duty battery systems are also being used in 16 fuel cell buses made by coach builder Van Hool and UTC Power, a unit of United Technologies Corporation.

Toshiba Corporation has started demonstration operation of H2One, an independent energy supply system based on renewable energy and use of hydrogen as a fuel for power generation.
