Proponents claim they are quicker to refuel and offer longer range than battery electric vehicles and can be low-carbon so long as the hydrogen is produced cleanly. There are only a few hundred hydrogen powered passenger vehicles on British roads.

A unique joint project between carmaker Volvo and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall is to see the production of battery-powered Volvos featuring plug-in hybrid technology as early as 2012. Volvo Cars also have FlexiFuel models which are powered by E85 (85 percent renewable bioethanol and 15 per cent petrol).

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Its been improving over time, but the power density and cost issues are still steep for what exists thus far. The car is expected to cost around $40,000.
