Nissan has engaged in crisis talks with EV-maker Fisker that could see the Japanese brand gain access to the failing Californian brand’s Alaska all-electric ute. Not all plug-in electric cars rely on battery power alone; some also have gasoline engines as backups, for longer range or more power. This year, the list gains three new entries (from BMW, Cadillac, and Mitsubishi) and loses one (the Fisker Karma). Last year, we identified six plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale during 2013.

By reducing wind resistance and weight, the company’s engineers effectively are reducing the amount of work an electric engine will have to perform to get the car up to driving speeds, which in turn conserves battery power.&#.
