Ford expects most agencies won’t need anything more than a regular 120-volt wall outlet to recharge. The lithium-ion battery can move the vehicle up to 21 miles on a single charge and up to 85 mph on battery power alone.

A hybrid vehicle runs on gasoline plus a little amount of electricity; the battery powers the car for a few miles and then recharges as it slows down or descends. Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. No announced plans.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. What the Volt has that electric cars lack is the ability to extend its range by means of burning gasoline, the most popular fuel among cars in the US.
