A new report by market research company IDTechEx—“Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors: Supercapacitors 2014-2024”—finds that supercapacitors are improving faster than lithium-ion batteries in most respects. Supercapacitors need not match lithium-ion battery energy density to replace much of that battery market.

As a crucial raw material in Li-ion batteries used to electrify vehicles, a significant volume of nickel sulfate will be required in the decade ahead from the booming automotive sector. Over the next decade, Roskill forecasts an explosive growth rate for the consumption of nickel in batteries (mostly in the form of nickel sulfate).

Chinese carmaker BYD and Volkswagen have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the options for partnership in the area of hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries.
