UPS is deploying 40 new medium-duty series hydraulic hybrid vehicles (HHVs): 20 in Baltimore and 20 in Atlanta. The HHVs in Baltimore will be deployed immediately while the vehicles in Atlanta will be introduced before the end of 2012. UPS currently has one HHV in operation in Laguna Hills, Calif.,

After the projects are complete this fall, GM will house more than 38 MW of solar power at 13 facilities around the world and more than 60 MW of renewable energy globally when combined with its landfill gas and biomass energy use. That is equivalent to the annual energy use of 25 homes.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. PV canopies will produce power and reduce temperatures underneath canopies.

The company also will test three different alternative fuels—Reclaimed Grease Fuel; B20 biodiesel; and liquefied natural gas—in its heavy-duty trucks. Wal-Mart will test this diesel-electric hybrid in the Detroit area. The electrical system can provide additional power during hill climbing, even at highway speeds.
