car2go is available in six cities in Germany, and has more than 100,000 customers there—the largest number of registered users in the country’s segment for flexible carsharing services, according to Daimler. The number of available car2go vehicles will also increase from 6,100 to more than 10,000 by the end of 2013.

Two autonomous taxis, from Pony.ai So far, around three in every 100 taxis there are robotaxis, developed by Baidu s autonomous car division, Apollo Go. Because a robotaxi doesnt contend with driver fatigue, the number of rides it can run per day can be greater than that of a nonautomated taxi. What about the economics?

Ten years ago, at the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) Trial event near Miami, I watched the most advanced humanoid robots ever built struggle their way through a scenario inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. A team of experienced engineers controlled each robot, and overhead safety tethers kept them from falling over.

Arizona-based startup Local Motors has unveiled Olli ( earlier post ), a 12-passenger minibus that may hit university campuses in Las Vegas and Miami later this year. Otherwise, smaller driverless vehicles (including taxis, rideshare services and private cars) could potentially eliminate the need for public transit.
