After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. All the commercially available freeway-capable (70 mph) EVs are priced way out of reach for the average consumer.

Offered in two trim grades – BX and EX – the Chery Omoda E5 is now available from $42,990 plus on-road costs, both configurations offering a 430km WLTP driving range, 150kW/340Nm front-drive motor, and 61.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The latter is the only no-cost option with all other hues attracting a $500 surcharge.
