R134a replaced CFC-12 as the MAC refrigerant in the early 1990s due to the negative impact of CFCs on the Earth’s ozone layer. It has a high cooling capacity and is available worldwide at low cost in the required qualities. With its GWP of 1, it is also the refrigerant that has the least impact on climate.
The settlement requires that BP address violations of Clean Air Act requirements limiting emissions of stratospheric ozone-depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) from leaking cooling appliances. HCFCs and other ozone-depleting substances, when released into the environment, destroy the earth's protective stratospheric ozone layer.
Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change and stratospheric ozone destruction. Human activities, including fossil fuel combustion and intensive agriculture, have increased the availability of nitrogen in the environment.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has reinstated the role of a key policy document created by agency scientists (the Staff Paper) that contains staff analyses of options for the administrator to consider when setting National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) to protect human health and the environment. A single molecule of reactive nitrogen may transition through many forms—ammonia, nitrogen oxide, nitric acid, nitrate and organic nitrogen—and may successively lead to a number of environmental, health and social impacts, including contributing to higher levels of ozone in the lower atmosphere.
Despite the widespread availability of the new, cleaner diesel engines for workboats, the cost and downtime required to upgrade to new engines and other factors have likely delayed investments in the newest technologies. Even better, the emission benefits associated with these projects will accrue quickly and persist for many years.
The study by Nadine Unger, Drew Shindell and James Wang will appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Atmospheric Environment. for the year 1995 (Olivier and Berdowski, 2001), and BC and OC emissions (which are not available in the EDGAR3.2 Environ. , The sum of total non-CO 2 and CO 2 forcing is indicated above each bar.
Given the numerous barriers outlined.the committee judges that the consumption mandate for cellulosic biofuels is not likely to be met by 2022 without substantial improvement in technologies in the next few years and a stable economic and policy environment to encourage accelerated demonstration and deployment of cellulosic biofuels.
NO x is a precursor for both ground level ozone and secondary PM 2.5 which are regulated under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) because of their adverse effects on human health and the environment.
