IEA: global CO2 emissions rebounded to their highest level in history in 2021; largely driven by China

Green Car Congress

billion tonnes, their highest ever level, as the world economy rebounded strongly from the COVID-19 crisis and relied heavily on coal to power that growth, according to new IEA analysis. Coal accounted for over 40% of the overall growth in global CO 2 emissions in 2021, reaching an all-time high of 15.3 billion tonnes.

Researchers Say Mix of Policies and Current or Near-Term Technologies Could Phase Out US CO2 Emissions from Coal-Fired Power Plants by 2030

Green Car Congress

CO 2 emissions from US coal-fired power plant could be phased out entirely by 2030 using existing technologies or ones that could be commercially competitive with coal within about a decade, according to a paper published online 30 April in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology. Siemens JET process enables more flexibility in steel production, lower CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

The newly developed Siemens JET Process enables steel mills to adapt their production processes more flexibly to raw material prices and emission regulations. As a result, steel producers can more easily take advantage of low prices for these materials. This results in excellent mixing and optimal use of the blown-in coal.

MIT Energy Initiative Publishes Report on Reducing CO2 Emissions from Existing Coal Plants

Green Car Congress

The MIT Energy Initiative has released a new report on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from existing coal plants. There is no credible pathway toward prudent greenhouse gas stabilization targets without CO 2 emissions reduction from existing coal power plants. We may not see a strong CO 2 price signal for many years.

A 605 MW PV plant in Germany is now Europe’s largest solar farm

Baua Electric

It sits on over 500 hectares (1230 acres) of the former Witznitz II open-cast brown coal mine. It will produce enough clean electricity to power around 200,000 households and avoid around 250,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. From that point the solar farm will feature more than 1.1 million modules.

EPA proposes CO2 limits for future power plants; flexibilities for phasing in control technology; anticipates negligible impacts

Green Car Congress

EPA is not proposing separate N 2 O or CH 4 emission limits or an equivalent CO 2 emission limit because of a lack of available data for these affected sources. Although emissions vary by plant and with the specific type of fuel, EPA provided illustrative examples of CO 2 emissions from EGUs: Conventional coal: 1,800 lbs CO 2 /MWh.

MIT Report Finds Natural Gas Has Significant Potential to Displace Coal, Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Role in Transportation More Limited

Green Car Congress

Natural gas will play a leading role in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions over the next several decades, largely by replacing older, inefficient coal plants with highly efficient combined-cycle gas generation, according to a major new interim report out from MIT. The first two reports dealt with nuclear power (2003) and coal (2007).
