The only cars available to test were AWD Techniqs with 20-inch wheels – same as the first batch coming to Australia. As soon as you hop in the Ioniq 6 you’re hit with the feeling of luxury, advanced tech and space. They’re a big improvement on the Ioniq 5’s slightly cheap looking and feeling doors.

Audi RS models – performance flagships set to pick up plug-in hybrid tech as early as 2021. Audi Q4 e-Tron – as with the e-Tron, the Q4 will be available as a regular SUV (with more boot space) and a sleeker Sportback. 4, the Q4 e-Tron will be available in a regular SUV body style or a sleeker Sportback, each with a 77kWh battery. Due in the second quarter, the BYD Seal U is available globally as a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) and a fully electric model. None of which will be cheap, the Polestar 3 is priced from $132,900 before on-roads.

Whereas the original Niro was available as a regular hybrid , a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a battery electric vehicle (EV), the new model does without the PHEV option. So instead it’s hybrid and EV tech for Kia’s new entry-level electrified SUV. But even as a hybrid the Niro doesn’t come particularly cheap. Kia Niro EV GT-Line.

While it’s not cheap, the EV9 comes loaded with equipment and technology to help justify a circa-$100K starting price when it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will get the smaller of the two available battery packs (with 76.1kWh of capacity) and get a single electric motor driving the rear wheels.

Granted, the recently-arrived Tesla Model Y makes just as much sense, but it wasn’t available as we were pulling this test together. None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. It’s an unbranded system designed in-house by Tesla, but it’s a quality bit of audio kit.

The whole infrastructure needs to be revamped, from electrical generation to transmission of to user sources and, finally, how to make plug-in sites available to city dwellers? So, the used batteries are almost arbitrarily cheap since an arbitrarily large fraction of their cost of production can be loaded on their use in transportation.

Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. None of the new electric cars are planning to use old-tech lead acid batteries. Current batteries in new Toyota hybridsare ~$3000 if they need to be replaced.

Yes, it’s kind of funny looking, but as it’s a Benz the cabin is luxurious and full of tech, while the drive is impressively smooth. Not cheap, but there still feels like decent value here.
