Steeped in history, the International Motor Show, or Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA), held biennially in Frankfurt, Germany, is already regarded as the world’s largest motor show – and this year it may be more important than ever. However, the event will also have a distinctly green theme.

Underneath the e-fuels banner, Audi also includes renewable electricity for recharging its e-tron vehicles (“e-power”) and, should the market so require it, “green” hydrogen (e-hydrogen, derived in the e-gas process). GM says it is already looking ahead to the next generation of Volt-based vehicles — it unveiled the Cadillac Converj concept in January — and says costs will come down as the technology spreads to more models. Generating electricity from wind and geothermal rather than a CO2 producing sources would help alleviate that problem.
