Arizona-based startup Local Motors has unveiled Olli ( earlier post ), a 12-passenger minibus that may hit university campuses in Las Vegas and Miami later this year. Otherwise, smaller driverless vehicles (including taxis, rideshare services and private cars) could potentially eliminate the need for public transit.

This week, the company announced plans to start testing in Miami, Florida, and Austin, Texas, as it looks to begin commercial ride-hailing operations in the cities it’s already established in. This past March, Zoox offered an update to its robotaxi taxi operations in its current cities, expanding operational hours and routes.

Waymo announced that it is partnering with Japanese taxi company Nihon Kotsu for the initial phase, where human drivers will operate Waymos cars so that the software can map the city. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. Japan, for its part, amended its laws to allow level 4 autonomous driving on its roads.
