A new study sponsored by Indiana University concludes that President Obama’s vision of one million plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) on US roads by 2015 will require concentrated efforts action from all stakeholders— the auto industry, federal government, the scientific community, and consumers—to be realized.

If too much or too little electricity is present in the power grid, the network can suddenly become unbalanced. In such an emergency, a bidirectional EV with charge to spare could come to the rescue. In principle, this problem might have been solved with software to govern the charging and discharging.

At present, PHEV technology alone is equipped to improve the current electric grid. Appendix E: PHEV and the Electrical Grid—fast charge v. slow charge. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), a subset of the PEV, uses electricity plus a different energy source (at present gasoline or diesel) to run its second engine.

Agrees on environmental and economic benefits, though some presentations backtrack on that; says batteries need further development before commitment to mass-production.

Price tag: about $25,000, made from 95% recyclable materials with a top speed of 65 miles per hour and range of 110 miles per charge. Think is also working closely with the Brussel based Eurelectric , the European union of electricity industry. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is building fleet charging stations in Portland and Phoenix.
