As part of its report on fourth quarter and year-end 2008 results, Ener1 outlined its EnerDel unit’s customer programs underway for its lithium-ion battery technology in applications spanning hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full electric vehicles. Overall, Ener1 reported 2008 revenues of $6.8 million compared to $280,000 in 2007.

And these days a billion dollars is barely a rounding error in the money going to prop up the American auto industry. BYD already has a plug-in hybrid for sale in small numbers in China, and has Warren Buffet-infused plans to market PHEVs and EVs in the US within a few years. Can I charge my new EV here?

A key goal of the Obama administration is to have one million ‘PHEVs’ or a fully electric vehicle on the road by 2015. No on has a lock on this future; everything is up for grabs.

France’s auto industry is probably the largest Western auto industry that goes completely under the radar in the US. Sweden is no stranger to these heights; in 2020 it did very well, going from 10% to nearly 30% EV market share, getting close to 100k just like Netherlands (still PHEV-dominated though).
