General Motors is working with communities such as San Francisco to develop a plan of action to establish the supporting technical and policy infrastructure required for broad commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt. GM described its approach at the Washington Auto Show.

And in the last two weeks, one of the largest utility companies in the United States, Pacific Gas & Electric, announced plans to work with General Motors in experiments with their bidirectional charging technologies. No word yet on which EVs will take part.

The auto industry is now gearing up to hash out those standards at the SAE conference in Detroit next week — and GM has a major stake in getting them out swiftly. According to GM, the updated standard can be expected by the end of the summer — just in time, perhaps, for the first production prototypes of the Chevy Volt.
