Duke Energy and ITOCHU’s program builds upon their involvement in Project Plug-IN, a large-scale public/private EV initiative based in Indianapolis. According to some auto industry estimates, electric vehicle (EV) batteries that can no longer charge to approximately 80% of their original capacity may be candidates for replacement.

The use of the electric grid for energy transfer is not well understood, much less addressed by designers of other electric and alternative fuel vehicles. The potential is enormous because the current grid has sufficient energy capacity to supply every vehicle in the United States if every one of them was a PHEV.
