Electric SUVs: Prices and Range The two biggest factors that have influenced most potential electric SUV drivers are the price of the vehicle and its range. Prices have been coming down while ranges have steadily increased. In 2021, the MSRPs on EVs were, on average, around $10,000 more than their gas-powered counterparts.

Plans for a 2012 general release of the PHEV Escape did not wow anyone. Of course Ford needed some plan to deal with last year's high gas prices. While GM takes the time to make a ground-up new PHEV vehicle, Ford and others could get the EV show on the road more quickly using existing platforms. All eyes are fixed on 2011.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
