In its new report on downsized and boosted gasoline engine technologies ( earlier post ) the ICCT highlighted Ricardo’s work on an “extreme” Miller cycle concept with high (13:1) compression ratio (CR) and central direct injection in a downsized boosted engine. A long exhaust stroke then extracts maximum efficiency.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. The convenience and low cost of this concept alone merit attention. In fact, the optimized PHEV is much more efficient as a long range liquid fuel vehicle, because the engine is downsized.
