Fraunhofer, KIT study finds CO2 mitigation potential of higher-range PHEVs greater than expected

Green Car Congress

The team found that, contrary to common belief, a PHEV with about 60  km (37 miles) of real-world range currently electrifies as many annual vehicles kilometers as a BEV, despite having a much smaller battery. Their CO 2 reduction potential is therefore just as large as battery electric cars, the researchers said. Resources. Jochem & M.

Percent change in median CO2 by scenario relative to 2000. A Georgia Tech City and Regional Planning study on climate change concludes that “smart growth” combined with the use of hybrid vehicle technology could reduce cities’ carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions significantly by 2050. Two possible futures: One in which no climate policies are implemented (red), and one with strong action to mitigate emissions (blue). Shown are fossil CO2 emissions (top panel) and corresponding global warming (bottom panel). The study explicitly takes into account the uncertainties related to modeling climate change.
