The Flatland Energy Storage Project, which will be sited in south-central Arizona near Coolidge, will use Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion battery storage. Plus, the Flatland project will save more than 169 million gallons of water each year compared to traditional energy generation. It’s expected to come online in 2025.

No new hydropower generation is expected because hydropower generation is energy limited—no more water is expected in the Columbia River system. The corresponding electric fleet sizes for the WECC footprint are 9 million LDVs, 70,000 MDVs and 94 HDV charging stations.

The Gemini project also made headlines with its 380-MW battery storage, alongside Arizona’s 300-MW Eleven Mile Solar Center. The majority of these retirements were natural gas (53%) and coal (41%) plants. Battery storage is also on the rise.
